Research and Analysis of Bird Motif in Aqkand Pottery

Abstract

The importance of the presence of birds in human life, the use of birds on pottery has been widely used throughout the history of pottery, which represent symbolic concepts such as happiness and victory, prosperity, flight, blessing, awakening and fertility.
The motif birds in Aqkand type pottery are very important due to the variety of bird species and the observance of the principles of visual arts. Aqkand pottery is one of the most significant examples of incised pottery from the 3rd to the 8th century AH, characterized by large animal motifs in the center and plant motifs in the background, decorated with lead glazes in yellow, green, and brown colors. The purpose of the research is to study of bird motif from the perspective of composition, pattern and color in the Aqkand pottery. This study aims to answer two questions: What are the pictorial characteristics of Aghkand type pottery in the analysis of motif birds? What form, shape and color patterns does the bird motif in Aqkand type pottery have that differentiates this group from other pottery? The research method is descriptive-analytical, and the information was gathered through library research and reliable internet sources. The statistical population of the study includes 21 pieces of Aqkand pottery from the 5th and 6th centuries AH, which are decorated. The findings of the research indicate that the birds are drawn in a simple and plant and geometric motifs have had an important effect on the composition, form and patterning of these birds.   Also, repeating patterns in the way of drawing a bird motif, such as the angle of the face, the plant motifs in the middle of the bird's body, the direction of the bird's head and body and moving legs, the use of variety of lines, are visual features.
