Analysis of Nastaliq Script Based on layered Semiotics (A Case Stady of Mir Emad al-Hasani’s Chalipa)

Abstract

Nastaliq script is one of the inventions of Iranian artists in which every detail and element conveys beauty  the interior and exterior beauty of the component script.The most brilliant Composition in Nastaliq  named Chalipa was achieved by MirEmad known as the best calligrapher of all ages  during the Safavid esra.he mostly practiced in the form of Chalipa.Mir Emad masterfully wrote Nastaliq according to the principles and rules and achieved the stage of purity and dignity in this art.he had put the elements together in the most beautiful way,Considering the accurate composition according  good arrangement and good proximity of elements.One of the methods used to analyze calligraphy is layered semiotics,which is investigated on two verbal and non-verbal levels and three parts of linguistic,non-linguistic and para-linguistic denotation.Layered semiotics considers the text to have several layers,some of which are more important than others.In the implications that are related to the text,all layers can be equally effective Meaning is also the result of the interaction between textual layers,cognitive knowledge and codes, and every non-verbal and verbal sign acquires meaning in a communicative action within a complex.  The purpose of this article is to examine a piece of calligraphy using the method of layered semiotics,which is the result of ciphers in the text and the textual layers of the line, and to answer the question of whether a piece of calligraphy is compatible with verbal and non-verbal signs.Can it act like a written text in communicating the concept to the audience?For this purpose,Mir Emad's crucifix was analyzed relying to written sources and through documentary research in an analytical-descriptive manner The result of the research shows that the level which distinguishes calligraphy from other writings is the non-verbal level,that includes non-linguistic and para-linguistic meanings, and calligraphy can convey meaning just like a text with different  layers.
