Handicrafts are related to wide areas such as identity, culture, climate, religion, economy, and entrepreneurship. The issue of education is also among the components that have been effective in the process of development and growth of handicrafts since the distant past. Today, higher education in handicrafts is a pioneer in training specialist personnel to meet the needs of this field. In general, some injuries and needs and not focusing on them have reduced the efficiency of some academic fields. In particular, in handicrafts, a specialized look at the discussion of design and its requirements, in order to prevent the stagnation of arts and the development of handicrafts, is one of the points that have received less attention. It is assumed that the design component of handicrafts is one of the necessary and influential factors in the education and development of handicrafts. The purpose of the research is to investigate and evaluate the necessity of training handicraft designers by emphasizing aspects of the importance of design in handicrafts and the requirements of a specialized look at it. The current research has been done using the descriptive-analytical method and with a critical look at handicrafts in higher education. According to the results, the design component has been neglected as a developmental factor in handicraft higher education. It seems that in the current situation, according to the expected goals, the training of handicraft designers will cause the dynamism of this field; therefore, it is suggested that by creating an independent trend in the undergraduate course of this field, under the title of "Handicraft Design", many of the needs and harms of this field will be solved.
