Postmodernism is an ambiguous and challenging term in various intellectual and cultural fields that has been widely used since the second half of the 20th century. This term is such a complex concept that there is no agreement among theorists in its definition, principles and components; while some have considered it a continuation of modernism and its complement, some believe postmodernism is a reaction against it. The manifestations of postmodernism in cultural and artistic fields like itself have been different and even contradictory. The present study tries to study some manifestations of this thought in contemporary graphics of Iran and to answer this question that with which mechanisms postmodernism has appeared in different branches of Iranian contemporary graphics. In order to answer this question, data was collected via library sources and then analyzed by descriptive-analytical method. In the sense that, firstly, the examples of Iranian contemporary graphics were selected, and secondly, among the works of contemporary Iranian graphic design, examples were selected that had more prominent elements of postmodernism in them. The purpose of this article is to describe and explain some of the components of postmodernism and their reflection in Iranian contemporary graphics. The results indicate that five components of postmodernism can be traced in Iranian contemporary graphics and these components are more visible than others. These five components are:
- Presence of the author
- Eclecticism
- Hyperreality
- Popular taste
- Decline of grand narratives
These components are more visible in contemporary Iranian graphics, especially since the 40s, compared to other components of postmodernism and graphic designers, knowingly or unknowingly, have used these components more than other components in design. These components can be seen in branches of contemporary Iranian graphics such as poster design, advertisement design and logo design.
