The discourse of Ashura is one of the Shia discourses in the social-political framework of Iranian society. The semantic system of this discourse is based on the uprising of Imam Hussein (AS), religious and Islamic values, the culture of martyrdom and sacrifice, the confrontation between right and wrong, and the victory of right over wrong. This discourse has caused the emergence of many texts in different fields of culture and art; from literary and written texts to cinematic and musical texts. The field of contemporary graphic design in Iran is one of the fields in which visual texts - especially posters with the theme of Ashura - have been developed in recent years and festivals have been formed with this theme. In this article, with the discourse theory of Laclau and Mouffe, the reading and formulation of the discourse of Ashura in contemporary Iranian posters was discussed, the semantic system of these works based on the ideology of Ashura and its governing values was studied. For this purpose, first, posters were selected with a purposeful method with the theme of Ashura. In the next stage, by using the concepts of Laclau and Mouffe, these posters were discussed in the semantic formation of these posters. The general method of this research is analytical-descriptive and its data was collected via library sources. The results of the research indicate that the discourse of Ashura by changing the symbolic system has been able to emerge from the ideological background of the contemporary Iranian society in the form of images and symbols and led to the production of texts based on Ashura culture and its values which indicates a deep belief in the values of Ashura culture in Iranian society.
